Following Lleyton Hewitt’s injury induced withdrawal from the remainder of the season, teen prodigy Bernard Tomic appears on the cusp of selection for the crucial September Davis Cup tie in Santiago.

Davis Cup captain John Fitzgerald revealed that players such as 15-year-old Tomic, Brydan Klein and Carsten Ball loomed as likely replacements for Australia’s Davis Cup stalwart.

“My first priority is to win every Davis Cup tie and if Lleyton was fit he would obviously be there,” Fitzgerald told the Australian newspaper. “It is going to be a potential step up for someone ... it has been something that has been coming for a while.”

“Who knows what could happen and how they will react.”s

Currently ranked at No. 846, Tomic could become the youngest ever player to represent Australia in the Davis Cup.
