Wozniacki On A High

Danish teen Caroline Wozniacki claimed her second and biggest WTA Tour title this month defeating Anna Chakvetadze at the New Haven Open yesterday.

Despite having no final experience prior to August, an unseeded Wozniacki rallied back from a first set deficit to win 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 against the World No 11.

“Stockholm ... was my first tournament and it was smaller than this,” said the 18-year-old, who enjoyed a prosperous August with a win in Stockholm and a third round showing at the Olympics.

“Here, it’s the tournament before the US Open, and it’s a really big tournament. You know, I have beaten some really great players on my way to winning this tournament.”

Indeed she has, defeating eighth-seeded Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova, third-seeded Marion Bartoli, and seventh-seeded Alize Cornet en route to a win against the former top five ranked Russian.

The Dane has moved from a ranking of No. 64 at the start of the season to No. 22, and looks set to break into the top 20 for the first time.
