World No. 1 Ana Ivanovic fell short of expectations once again on the big stage this morning, upstaged by French qualifier Julie Coin in the second round of the US Open.
In an error strewn performance, the Serbian glamour girl rarely looked comfortable, committing eight double faults and 37 unforced errors on her way to a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 loss.
Coin, ranked 188 th in the world, sealed her second and biggest upset for the tournament – and career – after defeating Australian No. 1 Casey Dellacqua in the opening round.
Asked later if she thought a win was possible, Coin replied: “No.”
Despite set backs earlier this year, failing to qualify for the other Grand Slams, the 25-year-old awaits a third round match-up with compatriot Amelie Mauresmo.
Australia’s dim hope of making any impact on the women’s draw came to an end with teen Jessica Moore going down to Anna-Lena Groenfeld of Germany 6-1, 6-3 in the second round.
