Three-time champion Marat Safin is questioning his position on the tour after a shambolic first round loss to Argentine qualifier Juan Monaco at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris yesterday.
The Russian committed seven double faults and 46 unforced errors en route to a shock 6-0, 7-5(4) loss.
“I just don’t know what happened. I just couldn’t find my rhythm. I didn’t take my chances,” said the 28-year-old.
The loss may have consequences for the two-time Grand Slam champion, who has found the going tough since falling outside of the top 30.
“I have had two difficult years and no vacation - pretty intensive.”
”If I feel like I want to continue to play I will - if not it will be over.”
With only five players confirmed for the season ending Shanghai Masters, there are a handful of players vying for the last three spots.
Among the frontrunners are Andy Roddick, David Nalbandian and Juan Martin Del Potro who will all be in search of points in Paris this week.
