Australia’s Sam Stosur and doubles partner Lisa Raymond booked a place in the US Open final yesterday dispatching of the fourth seeded pairing of Katarina Srebotnik and Ai Sugiyama.
The 2005 champions defeated their opponents 7-5, 6-1 and will now play either Cara Black and Liezel Huber or Anabel Medina Garrigues and Virginia Ruano Pascual, who are scheduled to meet in the second semi-final tomorrow.
Meanwhile, in the singles Serena Williams got one back on older sister Venus in the quarter-final at Flushing Meadows.
Serena avenged her Wimbledon final loss to Venus, winning 7-6 (6), 7-6 (7) in another gripping match. Her success takes the 26-year-old to a first US Open semi-final berth since 2002 and a career head-to-head record of 9-8 against Venus.
“I try not to look at her because, if I look at her, I might start feeling sorry,” Serena told a packed home crowd. “I want the best for her. I love her so much. She’s my best friend.”
The 26-year-old will meet Olympic silver medallist Dinara Safina for a place in the final. Both players are hoping to seize the title and the No. 1 ranking from struggling Serb Ana Ivanovic.
