Serena Williams won her third US Open title this afternoon, and first since 2002, out-powering Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic 6-3, 7-5 before a vocal American crowd.
The 26-year-old clinched the match in little over two hours. Her aggressive play assured the match was played on her terms and not that of her counterpunching opponent,
Serena’s taking of the No. 1 ranking from Ana Ivanovic is icing on the cake for the right-hander who claimed it back in July 2002 as well.
The loss was a bitter blow for Jankovic who continues her quest for a major.
Meanwhile, Australia’s Sam Stosur and doubles partner Lisa Raymond fell to the first seeded pair of Liezel Huber and Cara Black
The 2005 US Open champions fell to the favourites 6-3, 7-6(6).
Huber and Black’s first US Open doubles title is their eighth of the year.
