Roger Federer confirmed his status as the king of the US Open claiming a fifth straight title over British No. 1 Andy Murray this morning (AEST).
The Swiss master reinstated his status as a force on the tour with a crushing 6-2, 7-5, 6-2 victory, his 34 th successive win at Flushing Meadows.
“One thing’s for sure – I’m not going to stop at 13,” said Federer, who edges within one major of Sampras’ record 14.
“But there’s a great bunch of guys behind and in front of me like Andy. He’s done great the last couple of weeks and I’m sure there’s much more of Andy in the future as well.”
Federer became only the second player to win five consecutive US Open titles, after Bill Tilden claimed six from 1920-1925. The 27-year-old also equals Jimmy Connors and Pete Sampras as a five-time winner.
It was a bitter blow for Murray who was attempting to become the first British male to win a Grand Slam since Fred Perry in 1936.
The Scottish 21-year-old will undoubtedly take a lot from his Grand Slam final debut.
