Top seed David Ferrer bundled out of the China Open overnight, going down 6-3, 6-3 to World No. 92 Dudi Sela.
In a match that lasted only 70 minutes, Ferrer was not able to impose his usual counter punching style on the Israeli.
“He played better than me and he fought more than me,” Ferrer said.
Andy Roddick progressed to the quarter-finals with a 6-4, 6-3 win over US compatriot Brendan Evans, whilst former French Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero beat fifth-seed Fernando Verdasco 7-5, 6-4.
In the women’s event, local hope Zheng Jie beat Japan’s Ai Sugiyama 6-1, 6-2 to set up a quarter-final with Serbia’s Ana Ivanovic.
Svetlana Kuznetsova, Vera Zvonareva, Anabel Medina Garrigues and Dominika Cibulkova also progressed.
